DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

The Department of Microbiology provides various diagnostic, research and teaching facilities.

The laboratory under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP) comprises of a multidisciplinary unit providing services for 7 sections i.e

1. Bacteriology (including anaerobic bacteria) which comprises of microscopy, culture and antimicrobial sensitivity testing of various routine samples.
2. Serology, which includes Widal test, Scrub Typhus ELISA, CRP, RA factor and VDRL testing.
3. Virology, which includes ELISA testing for Dengue, Chikungunya, Hepatitis viruses A, B,C and E along with COVID-19 testing TrueNat, ID NOW and RAT. The process for establishing RTPCR testing facility is under process.
4. Parasitology, which includes stool examination for intestinal parasites and peripheral blood film examination for blood parasites.
5. Mycology, which includes microscopy and fungal cultures.
6. Immunology, which includes Mantoux test.
7. Tuberculosis section under the RNTCP for detection of tuberculosis having Fluorescent Microscopy and GENEXPERT (CBNAAT) facility.

The Standard Operating Procedures for all laboratory procedures have been prepared and the department is involved in EQAS programme in Bacteriology to ensure good quality services. The department also strives to monitor and educate hospital staff regarding Hospital Acquired Infections(HAI) and plays an important role in Hospital Infection Control(HIC) and Biomedical Waste Management (BMW). The department is engaged in hospital Antimicrobial Stewardship Program(AMSP). We are actively involved in raising awareness among students, faculty and other staff members by celebrating national and international healthcare associated events like World hand hygiene day, antibiotic awareness week, etc.

In medical education we aim to provide holistic, theoretical and practical training for MBBS students by implementing competency based medical curriculum. The departmental faculty are associated with both intra and extra mural research projects.
